LIPINSKI CHEERS WTO RULING AGAINST UNFAIR SUBSIDIES FOR BOEING’S FOREIGN RIVAL, CALLS ON OBAMA TO MORE AGGRESSIVELY DEFEND AMERICAN WORKERS AND MANUFACTURERS

(June 30, 2010) Congressman Dan Lipinski issued the following statement today regarding the determination by a World Trade Organization dispute panel that European Union subsidies to Airbus have harmed Boeing and American workers and violate WTO rules.

"This ruling is a victory not only for Boeing, but for American workers and for fair trade. The determination that the EU's illegal subsidies go back decades shows why it's important to take immediate action whenever U.S. companies and workers are being harmed by the protectionism of foreign nations. These subsidies, amounting to an estimated $200 billion, directly resulted in lost sales for Boeing and lost American jobs. We can't stand idle when foreign nations are giving their manufacturers an unfair advantage through subsidies, currency manipulation, and other policies. We've got to aggressively press our case, and if they don't back down, then we need to do what's necessary to level the playing field. Waiting around for job losses to mount is not an option. It's worth noting that it took five years to obtain a ruling in this case. How many sales did Boeing lose during that time, and how many American jobs were lost as a result? Even now, the EU has the right to appeal, and it's important we see this case all the way through to a successful conclusion. While it is to be congratulated, the Obama Administration needs to become much more aggressive in defending American jobs and ensuring trade is fair not just in name but in reality."
