Brookfield, IL — U.S. Rep. Dan Lipinski, D-Western Springs, met with Lithuanian Minister of National Defense Rasa Jukneviciene at the Darius and Girenas Monument in Chicago today at 11 a.m.
Lipinski and Jukneviciene layed a wreath at the monument, which commemorates Lithuanian-American pilots Steponas Darius and Stasys Girenas, Chicago residents whose ambitious 1933 attempt to fly nonstop from New York to Lithuania ended tragically when their aircraft crashed in Germany. Their transatlantic flight ranked as the second-longest in aviation history by distance up to that point.
Lipinski and Jukneviciene will also meet privately to discuss the need for continued Baltic air policing by NATO to preserve security and the integrity of the region’s airspace. NATO is currently scheduled to continue Baltic air policing until 2014. Jukneviciene is visiting the U.S. to meet with top defense officials.
